Both of these children died in 1906, after eating poison berries, after the family had moved to Clinton County, Ken-tucky. They were buried in ?Rose of Sharon Cemetery? in Burkesville. Oatis Alvis (my father) was bornOctober 1, 1906, in Clinton County, Kentucky, and died March 22, 1985, buried in Leonard, Texas. He married Winnie Rebecca Gibson on January 29, 1927, in Fan-nin County, Texas. Inis Mae was born October 8, 1908 in Hegira, Kentucky, and died Novem-ber 26, 1979. She married Henry W. Davis and they are also buried in Leonard, Texas. Bessie Edith was born April 15, 1911, in Hegira, Kentucky and married Andrew J. Woods in Fannin County. She lives in a Nursing Home in Leonard, Texas. About 1912, George and Mary E. Bennett moved to Fannin County, Texas, where their last child was born. Noble Leslie was born May 9, 1913. He married Sara Janway and they lived in Whitewright, Texas, where he died suddenly of a heart attack in 1978. He was buried in Whitewright. George Bennett died February 11, 1918, after a violent confrontation with a neighbor. Mary Elizabeth died March 31, 1949 and both were buried in the Leonard Cemetery, in Leon-ard, Texas. Jeremiah and Ellinder?s daughter, Rosa Frances Homer, married Jim Edd Keen, and they also moved to Fannin County, Texas, probably with George and MaryE. I believe they came on a train. Rosa and Jim Edd?s children were: Delmer (married Etta Cosby), Dora (married Norris Sutton), Paul (married Helen ?), Waymond (married Cordelia ?), and Jimmie Keen. Rosa?s first child, William A. Homer married Mary Bell Jarvis, and Florence Alba married John W. Simpson. More research should be done on these families. I sent a query to the Burkesville newspaper, but no Brutons responded. A lady, Mrs Vestal Cross did write and send me some information. She had been a neighbor to my grandparents, also her brother married Dora Bruton. My other information came from fam-ily bibles and the Census records. by Mary M. Bridges According to Cumberland County KY Courthouse Records,2 Bruton males enlisted in the Union as follows: 2nd Lt Sandusky BRUTON, Co B, 1st KY Cav, 12 Aug 1861 to 30 Sept 1865, born Bradley Co TN, age 21 and 1st Sgt Jacob S BRUTON, Co K, 1st KY Cav, 31 Octg 1861 to 4 Oct 1862, born Wayne Co KY, age 27 *There is later a Jacob Bruton who is postmaster of "Cumberland County Courthouse". Anyone have further info on these 2 men? Anne Bruton Fitzpatrick Little did I think when I came to South Florida in December to hibernate that I would practically drown myself in the family of Rosannah Bruton. She was one of the 21 children of Emanuel and Mary (nee Littrell) Sandusky who grew up in a two-story log house in Wayne County, Kentucky, which her father built in the early part of the century. It was, as I called it, the most patriotic house in the country. When I said that, my understanding was that Rosannah Sandusky, who was born in that house November 1, 1812, had four sons who fought in the Civil War. Now, after working with you and receiving more information, I have to increase the number to five. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, the descendants of these five will come forward and fill in the blanks. As your records show, Rosannah Sandusky married 21-year-old James Bruton of Wayne County, Kentucky, September 9, 1830. She was 18 years old then. `` You raised a question about James Bruton's middle name, or initial, whether "E" or "P" was a typographical error. I have also seen an "S." Isn't it possible, as was the custom in the family, to give him his mother's maiden name, Salle, just as Rosannah named her first child Addington after his paternal grandfather and another child Sandusky after her side of the family. Anyway, don't confuse yourself with Rosannah herself. It's gets tricky when you try to put all the Rosannahs in the proper place. When you asked me about the death of Rosannah Sandusky in Cumberland County May 14, 1863, it looked like you were referring to Rosannah Bruton which, if you had a lapse of memory, you would think it was Sandusky, as it certainly was in the beginning, and let it get you down. At least I think I have it straight. You had it straight, too. The roster of the First Kentucky Cavalry also has a similar twist. It lists one of Rosannah Bruton's sons as Braton Sandusky, 2nd Lt., Co. J, instead of Sandusky Bruton. Three of his brothers, Albert Kelly, Jacob S., and Jeremiah Bruton, which is spelled Braton in the official military records, were all privates in the same company. There is another private in the same regiment, James P. Bratton of Company L, and I wonder whether anyone in the Bruton family knows about him. In addition to the four brothers in the First Kentucky Cavalry, there was Addington David Bruton in Second Tennessee Infantry, thereby making five brothers who fought in the Civil War. I would like to know more about them, their heroism in the war, their families, what kind of work they did after the war. Evidently Jacob S. Bruton became the postmaster of Burkesville, the seat of Cumberland County, Kentucky, where his mother, Rosannah, died of diptheria in 1863. What a way for a Gold Star to go? Her oldest son died in a hospital at Cumberland Gap the year before, and it would take a little digging to find out where her four sons in the First Kentucky Cavalry were fighting at the time of her death. In material from "Cumberland County, Yesterday and Today," which Gretchn Pike kindly forwarded to Bruton-L@rootsweb.com, Mary M. Bridges claimed that Jacob S. Bruton was appointed postmaster at Burkesville on Jan. 20, 1874, and James S. Bruton on Feb. 20, 1874. When did Jacob S. Bruton die? If he was followed by his father as postmaster of Burkesville, it would be an interesting bit of history. Please provide whatever information you can. In addition to Jacob S. Bruton, the dates of death of Sandusky Bruton, Jeremiah Bruton(the date in 1918), and Albert Kelly Bruton are needed. Will everybody pitch in and add to the record. Indeed it is a pleasure to work with you all. With best wishes. THE NEIGHBOURS OF TEXAS As families go, the Neighbours in Texas is not a traditional one. At least not the family of Daniel and Edna Neighbours. It is different from the family of Robert Simpson Neighbors, who dropped the u from his last name, and served as an Indian agent, first for Texas in 1845 and later, off and on, for the federal government until he was murdered at Fort Belknap, Texas, on September 14, 1859. Exactly what made the family different is traced to the distaff side, beginning with Rosannah, the wife of Emanuel Sandusky, who was the grandson of Anthony Sadowski. She is said to have been a Cherokee. No one knows for sure. Not much is known about her. From time to time I have found out more about her and wrote about her in various newspapers and other places. But this is about the descendants of Daniel Neighbours and Edna Bruton, whom he married on April 14, 1892, two days after her fifteen birthday, because most of the rest of the Sadowski bloodline know little about them. Daniel Eben Delinney Dixon Neighbours, to use his full name, was born August 18, 1868, in Cumberland County, Kentucky, the son of Henry Bowe Neighbours and Louisa Fairchild Sewell. His wife, Edna Thomas Bruton, who was born in Burkesville, Kentucky, on April 12, 1877, was the daughter of Albert Kelly Bruton and Louvenia Smith. Without going into a lot of details, Albert Bruton, who was himself one of five brothers who enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, came from a family that had more soldiers on either side of the 1861-1865 conflict than any other family in the country. His mother, Rosannah nee Sandusky, was one of twenty children that came out of a two-story log house that her father, the second Emanuel Sandusky, built at Parmleysville, in Wayne County, Kentucky, where she was born November 1, 1812, and which she left September 9, 1830, when she married James S. Bruton. Little did the the grandson of Anthony Sadowski know that he built the most patriotic house in the nation. In the middle 1890s, several years after Albert Kelly Bruton pulled up stakes temporarily in Kentucky to seek his fortune in Texas, Daniel and Edna Neighbours, who had two children in Cumberland County, Kentucky, including Nettie Lou, the second child, who was September 10, 1893, moved to Grayson County, in north central Texas. The county seat, Sherman, was 65 miles north of Dallas. From 1890 to 1930 the corn farmers of the county outnumbered the people of Sherman. It had 5,762 farms by 1900. But the only child of the Kentucky family born in Grayson County was Henrietta Neighbours, September 19, 1896. The next child, Kelly Nat Neighbours, was born October 1, 1900, in Cooke County, Texas, on the Oklahoma border, farther from Dallas than their first home. The first settlers in the county brought slaves and in 1900 it didn?t have as many farms as Grayson County. Most of the 3,307 farms were engaged in cotton production and ginned 11,332 bales when Daniel Neighbours rented a farm there. By 1907 the Neighbours family was attracted to the farms in Hunt County, closer to Dallas, in northeastern Texas, because it was more ideally suited for the growth of cotton, which was Daniel Neighbours? long suit, and seven rail lines served the cotton growers of the county. Cotton production jumped from 22 bales in 1860 to 5,000 in 1900. Two more children were added to the family. They included twins, Ada May and Ida Fay Neighbours, on April 7, 1907. The black population of Hunt County rose, too. Whether it or choice played any role in Neighbours changing counties again is uncertain. The family moved back to Cooke County, where Mildred Rene and Willie B. Neighbours were born January 24, 1909, and March 3, 1911, respectively. The last cotton farm that Daniel Neighbours rented was outside Olney in Young County about 50 miles south of Wichita Falls, Texas. The youngest child, Kenneth Franklin Neighbours, who was born in Fannin City, Texas, on September 15 or 21, 1915, took to Olney like a duck to water. Olnet was noted for annual roundups by local ranchers and discovery of oil in 1923. It had three oil refineries and a population of 5,000 by 1930. Income came from farms, oil, and horses. Nothing discouraged some of the children of Daniel Neighbours from living there. Not even a tornado which hit it in 1951, killing two persons and injuring 75. Benjamin Harrison Norman, whom Henrietta Neighbours married, did November 25, 1979, in Olney. Dr. Neighbours, who began to train students in Texas history at Midwestern University at Wichita Falls in 1955, was the first president of the Fort Belknap Genealogical Society in 1962. In 1966, when I first met him, he asked Barbara Neal Ledbetter of Graham, Texas, to send me a story she wrote on Newcastle, in Young County, where a coal shaft was sunk in 1908. It included the story of a Polish coal miner at Newcastle, Joseph Nowakowski, who built a wooden altar in his home and in 1911 invited Rev. Paul Niedziela, who came from Poland, where he was born June 21, 1872, to celebrate Mass on it for Catholics in the area. Soon it was called the ?little church in the wildwood.? When the miners went on strike in 1914, the company brought in scabs from Alabama to replace Nowakowski and other Polish miners. Father Niedziela, or Sunday as he called because his name was so translated from Polish, himself left about 1920. Because the mining village was near Fort Belknap, former Indian fighters held reunions there and Dr. Neighbours frequently talked about them in his lectures. Like the Neighbours in Texas, the population of Newcastle, once over 1,000, slowly dwindled away. In 1990 it had only 505 persons. The wooden altar that Nowakowski made is now in the Fort Belknap Museum. Edward Pinkowski ROBERT BAGBY, SR. 3, (WILLIAM 2, JAMES 1) was born about 1740, and died Unknown. He married UNKNOWN. Bagby, Jr., also Revolutionary War Pension application of 9/4/1839. Newspaper Article: Source: Glasgow, Kentucky, Daily Times, Author: Sandi Gorin, South Central, Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society — Thursday, December 14, 1995: excerpts from an article submitted by Elaine Porter Bagby, August, 1999, to Sherri Schäefer Bagby. There were two Bagby families who came here early — John A. and Sylvanus who married here to Frances Courts, daughter of John Courts. It appears that they were brothers John was the son of John A. Bagby, Sr. and Theodosia whose name we cannot find. John A. Bagby, Jr. was born May 25, 1761 in Virginia, and while residing in Amherst County married one Matilda Davis. From the deed books, it appears that John and Matilda came here to Barren County about 1812, leaving some of the family behind. John died here in Barren County November 17, 1834; Matilda, who had been born in Virginia, November 19, 1772, died here February 12, 1865. According to John Jr.'s and various family records, it appears that they had nine children: (1) Elvira Bagby, b. Nov. 3, 1793, married Joseph Paxton in Rockbridge County, Virginia, on Sept. 12, 1815. They came to Barren County at a later date; most likely Elvira had received a letter from her father telling her how wonderful Barren County was and she was able to convince Joseph and other Paxtons to make the trek to Kentucky. (2) Landon Bagby, born December 30, 1795 in Virginia, married Nancy Fields in Barren County on December 21, 1818. (3) Roderick Bagby, born August 10, 1798, died September 11, 1852, married here on October 30, 1823 to Virginia Wood, born October 27, 1805; died April 30, 1892. (4) Walter Bagby born April 3, 1802 married Eliza J. McClure in Barren County on January 2, 1831. (5) Richard Bagby born December 23, 180?, married Sarah Fields (daughter of Sarah) in Barren County on July 5, 1825. (6) William Bagby, born June 5, 1808, died 1828. (7) Charles Davis Bagby, born November 18, 1813 - no information. (8) Nancy C. Bagby, born June 3, 1805, married William Byrd Rogers on January 30, 1834 in Barren County, died August 6, 1839. (9) Theodosia M. Bagby born September 1810, died single August 28, 1824. Of this family, Elvira Paxton Bagby, John Bagby, Matilda Davis Bagby, Roderick, Theodosia, William, Nancy and William Byrd Rogers are buried at the Rogers Cemetery. Franklin Gorin in "Times of Long Ago" spoke several times of the Bagby family. He mentioned that William Byrd Rogers (who married Nancy C. Bagby) was the son of Byrd Rogers and gave a warm write-up on his family as well as the Bagby family. He stated that "Captain John Bagby, of Revolutionary fame, raised a large and highly respectable family..." John Bagby had served in the Revolutionary War and was discharged the rank of Sergeant, but he was always spoken of as Captain. Son Walter Bagby was noted as being an early merchant in Glasgow and several of the Bagby family here were well noted for their fine carpentry work.< By the time the 1850 federal census of Barren County was taken, the John A. Bagby families had grown. Roderick Bagby was shown with his wife Virginia and had daughter Ann M., 18; Elvira l., 15; and son Charles, age 7. Matilda Bagby, wife of John A. Jr., a widow, is residing with William Byrd and Nancy Bagby at age 75. Son Landon is not shown; Walter and Eliza McClure Bagby are not shown; Richard and Sarah Fields Bagby are not listed and Joseph and Elvira Bagby Paxton have seemingly already moved out of Barren County. On the 1860 census we find that Virginia Bagby (wife of Roderick) is residing with William Wood Sr., and wife Nancy and is 54 years old. Next door to them is John H. Bagby (son of Roderick and Virginia) who is 32; wife Sophia (Smith) and their children: William S., 3; Alice, 2: Lewis E., 1 month old and Elvira, age 25 (unconfirmed as to who she is). There are sundry younger-generation Bagby's who could have been descendants of either John A. Jr. or Sylvanus Bagby. William Byrd and Nancy Bagby Rogers are shown with son John B., 26; William L., 22; Charles P., 20; George W., 17; Margaret A., 15; and Henry T., 12. This is as far that space permits us to trace the line. NOTE: The Rogers Cemetery was formerly the Bagby Cemetery until the property changed hands through marriage. Source: Elaine Porter Bagby. First wife was Janneken Boudonck, mother of Abraham (b. 1687). Abraham(m. Mary Pennock) fathered Johannes (John) (m. Anna Christina ???), These two had 11 childthe first being my ancestor Abraham, b. 1728. He married Elizabeth LaFever in 1748, and theirst first child (of 8) was Abraham, b. 1750, died 1808. Abraham (1750) married Catherena Zink) Their 3rd child of seven was my ancestor Andrew Wesley LaFever, (b. 1774, d.1847) Andrew Wesley (1774) married Nancy Ard in 1796 at Washington, VA. Andrew Wesley Lafever (1774) and Nancy Ard (maybe Ord) had 10 children, the fourth being my paternal great-great grandfather Eli LaFever (born 1803) and and the 8th being my maternalG-G-G Grandfather Asher LaFever. Through Eli (1803) I am descended from his daughter Talitha (1835( LaFever Parsley, who died when my Grandmother Polly Ann Parsley Sherrell was born in 1858. Polly Ann married William Jordan Sherrell, Sr., bore my father William Jorden Sherrell, Jr. in 1895 plus five dughters. On my mother's side, Asher Lafever (b. 1812 and brother of above Eli) married Ellen Ann Carwell about 1829 and bore Thomas Samuel LaFever (b. 1830) and a girl. Thomas Samuel Lafever (1830) married Rachel Trobaugh in 1850 in TN., and they born 10 children, the second being my maternal Great-Grandfather, Asher LaFever (b. 1850) Asher LaFever (1850) married my Great-Grandmother Canzada Elrod in 1870, and they bore ten children, the second being my maternal grandfather, Andrew J. LaFever. His daughter Mary Canzada (b. 1900) married my father, William J. Sherrell, Jr. son of the above mention Polly Ann Parsley Sherrell. I am 75 years old, and I remember metting many of the old LaFevers. I also met Canzada Elrod LaFever when I was a small child. I have a faded picture of all Asher and Canzada's children as adults, about 1910 or so. There is a great display of LaFever pottery at the Applachian Museum in Norris, TN. It is mostly from the family of Asher LaFever (b.1850), whose children lived mostly in the Baxter, TN. area. I hope this information is right. I knew back through Abraham LaFever (d. 1808), and hope the further back things are correct. There must be million of LaFevers in America!
